The waist is elastic the whole way round with a flat woven cord through it, tied at the front. There is no fly and there are no belt loops - you pull them on and pull the cord. The leg is cut wide and stops at mid-thigh, well above the knee, and the pockets are set deep into the side seam so they hold something without pulling the shape out. The weave has a visible slub to it, which is what keeps it looking like a summer short rather than a gym one.
